DuplexDrama

DuplexDrama: A Script-Aware Full-Duplex Spoken Dialogue Dataset with Sound Events

6,400 multi-turn spoken dialogues (800 h: Chinese ~500 h + English ~300 h) for full-duplex speech-language research

Abstract

We present DuplexDrama, the first synthesized spoken dialogue dataset that combines four dimensions not simultaneously available in any prior corpus:

  1. Persona & Scenario — complete persona and scenario settings produced via LLMs;
  2. Full-duplex behaviors — three behaviors carried as tags: interruption, backchannel, and in-sentence pause, rendered as acoustic overlap rather than clean turn-taking;
  3. Expressive speech — wide speaker coverage with a closed seven-class emotion vocabulary aligned to persona;
  4. Script-aware sound events — sound events injected at proper positions parsed from the script, affording non-speech information beyond voice.

We have produced more than 2,000 hours of audio data with a 64-voice timbre pool spanning 13 personas and 5 age buckets; 3.8% of all turns carry at least one full-duplex behavior. This data has been validated through internal full-duplex model training. We will release a curated subset of 6,400 bilingual dialogues (800 hours, Chinese ∼500 h + English ∼300 h) to advance full-duplex spoken dialogue model research. An asset bank supplies 600 environment audios (across 7 scene categories) and 2,203 sound event audios (52 categories), both injected into the dialogue track through a match strategy. Data samples are available on this page; LLM-judge evaluation prompts will be released with the dataset.

Pipeline

DuplexDrama pipeline: a seed topic passes through five stages — persona and scenario generation; scripts with behavior, emotion, and event annotations; TTS and audio assembly; the script-aware background-channel construction (the highlighted novel step); and a quality validator — producing a long-form full-duplex spoken dialogue.
A seed topic enters; a long-form full-duplex spoken dialogue with interruptions, emotion, and script-aligned sound events is generated.

Listen to DuplexDrama

12 excerpts of roughly 60–100 seconds, each cut from a full dialogue. Press play; the two waveforms are the HM and AI channels, so overlapping speech is visible directly. Both tracks carry their ambient background — click either channel label to mute it and hear them apart.

Watermarked: every excerpt is synthetic speech carrying an inaudible per-channel AudioSeal watermark (EU AI Act Art. 50), traceable via its .uuid.json sidecar.

Note: these are excerpts, not complete dialogues — cut this way so the dataset's characteristics are audible at a glance rather than buried in a several-minute recording. Expand "Transcript" to read every turn in the excerpt; the event turn is highlighted in amber.

  2. 0:07HMExactly! It's a load of nonsense. He just doesn't want to come back and sort out his shoddy work.interrupt
  3. 0:13AIOkay, let's take a breath. It sounds like a proper mess, but we can sort this out. I just need a few more facts before we panic.
  4. 0:21HMDo I even have a case for small claims?
  5. 0:26AIYou might well do. But before we jump straight to small claims court, we need to look at what you've actually got in writing to support your claim.
  6. 0:33HMIn writing? I've got the photos I just printed out. They show the cracks clear as day.
  7. 0:39AIPhotos are brilliant for proving the damage. But the key question is how you've communicated your complaints to Gary so far.
  8. 0:48HMOh. Well, mostly we just talked on the phone. Or he'd chat to me while he was having his tea in the garden. I didn't put anything in writing. Wait, no—I texted him the photos first, and then he rang me back.
  9. 0:54AIRight.
  10. 1:01AIThat's a start. But what about the original quote for the eight and a half grand? Did he email you a proper breakdown of the work?
  11. 1:10HMOh, I'm not sure. I'd have to check my laptop.
  12. 1:15AIGo and grab it. We need to see exactly what he promised you in writing before we can do anything else.
  13. 1:22HMRight, I've got the laptop. Just waiting for the screen to⏹ 1s wake up. Come on, you stupid thing.
  14. 1:30AINo rush. Let's talk about how you actually agreed to this work. Did Gary give you a proper contract to sign?

Transcript (21 turns)
  1. 0:00AIWe'll set you up with an online business account first. But before we lock in that standard rate, we should talk about the contents to make sure there aren't any restrictions on sending food items.
  2. 0:07HMThe contents? You mean the crisps? They won't go off in the post, if that's what you mean.interrupt
  3. 0:13AIActually, I was thinking about the discount codes. Since they have a clear monetary value, we might want to look at the service tiers to make sure they're covered in case of loss or damage.
  4. 0:20HMOh, I see.
  5. 0:23HMWhat sort of tiers are⏹ 1.9s we talking about?
  6. 0:29AISo, standard second class gets them there in two to three days, but there's no delivery confirmation.
  7. 0:34HMRight, just drop them in a postbox and hope for the best.
  8. 0:39AIExactly. The next step up is Royal Mail Tracked 48. That gives you full tracking to the delivery point, so you know when they arrive.
  9. 0:43HMBut that costs more, obviously.
  10. 0:46AIIt does. It sits at about one pound forty per item.
  11. 0:50HMOuch. That more than doubles my postage costs right out of the gate. I mean, do I really need tracking for a bit of direct mail?
  12. 1:01AIThat depends on what's inside. Are those discount codes single-use, or generic?
  13. 1:07HMThey're unique. Twenty per cent off their first three boxes. If someone else nicks the code, we lose out so we can't afford to have them go missing. Maybe we do need tracking after all.
  14. 1:14AIAh, I see.
  15. 1:19AIThat makes them high-value items. If a standard letter goes missing, you wouldn't know until a customer complains about it.
  16. 1:26HMOh, I hadn't thought about that. And it's not just the codes, actually. Hang on.
  17. 1:33AITake your time, I'm still here.
  18. 1:35HMListen to this. The kale crisps are proper fragile. If they get crushed in transit, it's a terrible first impression, and nobody subscribes for dust.
  19. 1:45AIThat sounded quite delicate. With the tracked service, the parcels are handled slightly differently they go through a gentler sorting stream, so they’re not piled under heavy catalogues.
  20. 1:50HMMeaning they won't get squashed under heavy catalogues?
  21. 1:54AIWe definitely aim to prevent that. Plus, the Tracked 48 tier includes compensation cover up to a hundred and fifty pounds.

  1. 0:00AIIt has to be. The aroma is so sweet and heavy. Like, intense, jammy blueberry just punching me in the face. I can't even handle it. I seriously can't wait to brew it tomorrow morning.

  4. 0:20AIOh, how's that going? Did you get that new temperature probe working?
  5. 0:24HMSort of. Still tweaking the software on it, but it's getting there. Honestly, your Yirgacheffe sounds way more exciting right now.
  6. 0:32AIWe definitely need to try this together. I want to see if the blueberry actually comes through in the cup.
  7. 0:38HMFor sure. It should make a wild pour-over.
  8. 0:41AIExactly! I haven't even brewed it yet and I'm obsessed. I'm just so shocked I found something this good locally.
  9. 0:48HMIt makes you wonder what else we're missing out on. Right under our noses, just waiting to be found. Like, how can we find more local roasters hitting this kind of quality?
  10. 0:51AIRight?

  2. 0:04HMSorted? How do you sort out the sky opening up on my guests?interrupt
  3. 0:08AIBy being prepared. Are you near your screen?
  4. 0:11HMI mean, yes? I'm just pacing around the suite in my pyjamas trying not to wake Mark. Why?
  5. 0:19AII'm sending a video call request now.
  6. 0:22HMOkay, hang on. My hands are shaking too much to hit the button.

  15. 1:07AII pulled the crew off the South Lawn the second that weather front shifted so we could get the conservatory set up and looking perfect for you. So we've had a fair bit of time to get it sorted.
